How to Read an INCI Ingredient List

Learn the basics of ingredient labels without falling for clean-beauty myths.

What the order means

Cosmetic ingredient lists generally put ingredients in descending order by weight until the applicable low-concentration threshold; below that threshold, ordering rules can differ. The list alone cannot reveal the finished product’s efficacy.

Look for function, not fear

Water, humectants, emollients, preservatives and fragrance materials all serve different roles. ‘Chemical-free’ is not meaningful scientific terminology, and the presence of a long ingredient name does not make a product unsafe.

Make it useful

Check the full label, allergen considerations, your skin history and independent sources. Avoid concluding that a product works—or fails—just because an ingredient appears near the top.
